Considering Beam Angles: Flood-, Spot-, or Combo- Beam. What is the best choice?

In order to ensure a safe and efficient work environment it is important to provide a wide beam for close range applications but allowing for sufficient terrain illumination.

The ideal beam angle depends heavily on the intended use:

Strands work light X and XP

Spot Beam: Powerful searchlight with up to 1.5 km range

An LED work light with a low beam angle produces a focused cone of light, the so-called spot beam. A spot beam emits a comparatively narrow light pattern but generates an enormous range. Ideal for long-range illumination, for example as a searchlight

Advantages:

Very long range, therefore ideal for long distances, unfrequented trails or as a searchlight, e.g., for boats.

Disadvantages:

The light beam is very narrow, so obstacles on the side may go unnoticed.

Mounting positions:

Particularly suitable for mounting on the vehicle roof, above the windscreen or on the bumper. The higher the light is mounted, the higher the range.

Flood Beam: Floodlight for Close-Range Illumination

A flood beam work light is suited for medium and close-range illumination as it distributes the light homogeneously over a wide area. Ideal use as a floodlight for short distances or as additional side lighting on a tractor, construction machinery or off-road driving.

Advantages:

The wide beam makes it easier to see obstacles on the sides. Also ideal for fast and winding trails and as a work light for construction machinery.

Disadvantages:

Low range.

Mounting positions:

On the bumper, rear or side. A floodlight can also be mounted on the roof, but there is a risk of glare through the windscreen / bonnet.

Combo Beam: No Compromise - Spot and Flood Beam Combined

A Combo Beam combines Spot and Flood beam angles, producing a homogeneous light pattern in the close- and wide- range. This makes it the ideal work light for many applications, when used as a headlight.

Advantages:

Thanks to the combination of flood and spot light elements, obstacles are detected at an early stage, both at close range and at a distance, and safety is increased. Perfect for vehicles that only have room for one headlight.

Disadvantages:

Since two light patterns are combined, the individual functionality and performance of the flood and spot light is limited.

Mounting positions:

This light pattern is particularly suitable for all forward-facing locations on your vehicle.

Working lights in agriculture: Use on tractors and other agricultural machinery as main headlights or auxiliary lighting

LED work lights are the best choice for agricultural machinery to work in the field at dusk or in the dark. Compared to halogen headlights, LED spotlights are less sensitive to vibrations and more efficient, as they generate almost no heat. Therefore, purchasing a premium LED headlight is a good way to upgrade a tractor, harvester, or mower with outdated halogen technology or to add additional lighting.

High-quality work lights enable safe and efficient working even at dusk and at night. This allows important work such as sowing or harvesting to be carried out at optimal times, which significantly increases productivity.

Advantages of LED work lights in agriculture and farming:

  • Harvesting: For optimal results, it is important to keep a close eye on the crop, cutter bar, and header in order to minimize losses and adjust the machine optimally. Obstacles such as stones must be detected early to avoid expensive damage to the harvester.
  • Sowing and cultivation: Precise and complete sowing is crucial for the subsequent yield. The seed drill, the track marker, and the connection to the previous track must be precisely detected to avoid overlaps or gaps. Good visibility is also required to control seed placement.
  • Soil cultivation (plowing, cultivating, harrowing): Very bright light is required to control the depth of the implement and to be able to watch out for obstacles in the soil. Uniform soil cultivation is only possible with a good view of the implement and the work result.
  • Plant protection and fertilization: When applying, the function of each individual nozzle of the field sprayer must be visible. The driver must check the spray cone to ensure that the agent is distributed evenly and does not drift due to wind. These tasks require the highest precision in order to protect the environment and save money.
  • Farmyard and loading work: Tight spaces increase the risk of accidents involving people or collisions with buildings and other machines. When loading trailers with the front loader, maneuvering in the barn, or coupling and uncoupling heavy equipment, all-around visibility is crucial to prevent accidents.

From wide close-range illumination to long-range illumination for large areas, there is a suitable lighting solution for every scenario in agriculture and farming.

Work lights for cars, commercial vehicles, trucks, off-road vehicles and vans in off-road use

LED work light mounted on an Isuzu Dmax 4x4 pickup according to StVZO

According to the German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO), the use of one or more work lights is permitted for multi-track vehicles, but they must not be switched on in road traffic. A detailed explanation of the regulations for the installation and operation of work lights in accordance with (StVZO) § 52 can be found in the LED Work Light FAQ

This means that there are many possible uses in off-road driving, as additional headlights with a separate switch, e.g. as LED light bars for pickup trucks or other off-road vehicles, as well as camper vans and commercial vehicles.

When driving off-road, LED auxiliary headlights are not only a visual upgrade, but also a crucial safety and functional feature. They are used in numerous situations where the standard vehicle lighting is far from sufficient.

Advantages of LED work lights for off-road vehicles:

  • Driving at night on unpaved roads and trails: Auxiliary headlights provide much wider and deeper illumination. With a combination of floodlights and spotlights, you can see the path ahead, obstacles to the side such as branches or rocks, and dips in the ground much earlier. These are crucial seconds to react and avoid collisions.
  • Technically challenging terrain and slow crawling: When maneuvering slowly over rocks, through narrow passages, or in dense forests, close-range illumination is crucial. Wide-beam work lights directed to the side or downward illuminate the wheels and the immediate area around the vehicle. This allows the driver to precisely control the tire placement and identify obstacles or deep holes directly in front of the vehicle.
  • Vehicle recovery and breakdown assistance in the dark: A breakdown or a stuck vehicle in the dark is a dangerous situation. Side- or rear-mounted work lights enable safe work on the vehicle. You can securely attach recovery straps, operate a winch, or change a tire without having to rely on a flashlight. The surrounding area is illuminated over a large area, which increases safety for all helpers.
  • Setting up a campsite for camping: With wide-beam floodlights mounted on the side or on the roof rack, the entire campsite can be illuminated. This makes it easier to set up tents, cook, and immediately identify tripping hazards.
  • Poor weather conditions such as heavy rain, fog, or snowfall: Under these conditions, the reflection of your own high beams can actually impair visibility. Low-mounted auxiliary work lights (e.g., fog lights) can shine through the fog layer and make the ground directly in front of the vehicle more visible.

TIP: Since work lights do not have to comply with StVZO standards, there is leeway in terms of allowed angle of inclination, light intensity, and light color. The “reference value” that must not be exceeded according to StVZO also applies only to high beams that are switched on while driving.

Work lights in the logistics industry: Indispensable for trucks, transporters and forklifts for optimal illumination of work areas

To ensure shadow-free and glare-free illumination of the work area, the work light must have a lens with ideal light diffusion.

The innovative lens of the new FOR9T work lights by Strands divides the light output into two sections. The lower part of the light cone shines more brightly, while the upper part emits a more diffuse light that is much less dazzling and reduces eye fatigue caused by bright lights in dark environments.

In the fast-paced logistics industry, good lighting is crucial for safety and efficiency. LED lights can be used on a variety of vehicles to optimally illuminate work areas.

On industrial vehicles such as forklifts, LED work lights often serve as the main headlights for use in poorly lit warehouses or outdoors.

On trucks, LED work lights can be mounted as additional lighting for the loading area, as reversing lights, or for side lighting of the vehicle. The additional lighting improves visibility, especially during loading and unloading, and minimizes the risk of damage to cargo and vehicles.

Advantages of LED work lights in the logistics industry:

  • High light output with low power consumption: This conserves the vehicle battery, especially in electric vehicles such as forklifts.
  • Long service life and robustness: LED headlights are insensitive to vibrations and shocks and have a very long service life, which reduces maintenance costs.
  • Better visibility: The daylight-like light color of LEDs improves concentration and reduces eye fatigue.
  • Increased safety: Good illumination minimizes the risk of accidents and reduces the risk of property damage.

Work lights in forestry: Robust and powerful lighting for harvesters, forwarders and other forestry machines

Strands Ultra Flat Duo extrem kompakter LED Arbeitsscheinwerfer

Forestry is one of the most demanding industries for both people and machines. LED work lights are an absolute necessity and not a luxury. Work often takes place at dusk, at night, or under dense canopy where daylight barely penetrates.

As with construction site vehicles, particularly compact lights are often required here, which fit into even the smallest corners and allow flexible mounting positions.

There are many scenarios in which LED work lights prove indispensable:

  • When harvesting timber with harvesters and processors: Felling, delimbing, and cutting trees to length with the harvester head is the area with the highest lighting requirements. This application requires perfect, shadow-free illumination of the entire working area. Powerful LED work lights on the crane and on the cab roof follow the harvester head and illuminate the tree trunk precisely. Only in this way can the operator assess the quality of the tree, make the cut precise and control the machine efficiently without damaging the remaining stock.
  • Transporting timber with a forwarder: After felling, the timber must be transported safely out of the forest. Loading the tree trunks with a crane and driving on uneven, narrow skid trails requires powerful work lights. LED lights on the crane enable the logs to be gripped and loaded safely. A powerful light bar at the front of the vehicle illuminates the logging trail to detect obstacles such as tree stumps, rocks, or steep slopes in short time. Additional floodlight work lights at the rear and on the sides are essential for maneuvering in narrow passages.
  • Ensuring general work safety: The forest floor is uneven and full of hazards. Getting in and out of the machine or moving around the vehicle requires good lighting to avoid tripping accidents caused by roots, branches, or holes in the ground. Other people in the work area are also more visible to the machine operator and vice versa.
  • For reforestation and forest management: Good lighting is also crucial when working with smaller machines for soil preparation for planting, planting young trees, or forest maintenance with smaller forestry tractors or special vehicles. Precise work is only possible if the driver can see the vehicle and the ground clearly. Good lighting allows this work to be carried out in the morning or evening hours, making optimal use of the often short time windows available.

Work lights for emergency and service vehicles: Maximum brightness and reliability for illuminating deployment sites

LED auxiliary headlights are crucial for emergency vehicles used by the fire brigade, police, THW (Federal Agency for Technical Relief), rescue and towing services. In many critical situations, they ensure the necessary safety and efficiency and create a safe working environment. Powerful work lights and light bars with integrated warning lights are often used.

LED auxiliary work lights are crucial for emergency vehicles. In many critical situations, they ensure the necessary safety and efficiency and create a safe working environment.

Advantages of work lights for emergency response and service vehicles

  • Illumination of emergency sites at night and in poor visibility: Whether traffic accidents, fires, technical assistance, or medical emergencies in darkness, rain, or fog: powerful LED technology illuminates the entire emergency site extensively and homogeneously. This enables emergency services to immediately identify hazards such as leaking fluids, debris, or rough terrain and to work safely. When treating a seriously injured patient on a dark road, life-saving measures can be carried out with precision. During nighttime helicopter operations landing on an unlit field or road, LED spotlights can safely illuminate the landing site.
  • Searching for people in difficult terrain: A long-range spotlight is ideal for searching for missing or fugitive persons. When searching forest areas, fields, riverbanks, or collapsed buildings, searchlights, often mounted on swivel brackets, enable targeted searches over long distances.
  • Securing and directing traffic at hazardous locations: In addition to blue lights, auxiliary headlights are also used to secure accident sites, set up roadblocks, or direct traffic at large events.
